The Smith Community explores the SMITH families of Posey County, Indiana in the 1800's. At least some of the Smiths are believed to have migrated from North Carolina. Here also is the slim inforamtion I have on the SPAIN family, also of Posey County.

Below is a list of the major research questions I am trying to answer on the Smith family. If you have any clues or information that would help to solve these puzzles please send me an email at smith@hoosierroots.com.

  • Who were the parents of Daniel Smith, born March 22, 1788 in North Carolina? Find verification and additional detail on his birth. Daniel married Nancy B. Spain, supposedly in Virginia; find documentation and details.Trace his movements form Virginia through Tennessee, to Gibson and Posey counties in Indiana. Did he live for a time in Pike County, Indiana as well?

  • Who were the parents of Nancy B. Spain, wife of Daniel Smith? Docuement her birth in 1797 in Virginia, as well as her marriage to Damiel. Find documentation to support the birth dates and locations of her children. Are there missing children? If Elizabeth, born 1814 is really her first child, surly there were other children before the next in my records - Luvica/Luvisa, born 1825.

  • Find documentation on the birth of Luvica / Luvisa Smith (b 1825 Indiana.) Try to determine if "Luvica" or :Luvisa" is the most used first name. Find documentation of her death (May 13, 1879) including location (presumably Posey County, Indiana), as well as place of burial.
